Stick it to the Man: A Look into How Women are still Left Behind

It is 9 a.m on a Saturday morning, the hardware store fills with men and women searching for gadgets that will complete their weekend- long projects. I stand in the isle with my William Tell Hardware T-shirt on, Walky-talky in hand and am completely ready to satisfy any customer’s needs. A man approaches me and says, “Can you direct me towards a guy who works here? I need to ask a question.” I force a smile, squeeze tight on my Walky-talky, and ask for Joe. When Joe arrives, the man asks where the duct tape is. I could of died, not only did I know exactly where the duct tape was but I also could have told him exactly where to shove it. Do we still live in a society where men are thought to be more superior to women? If not, then why is it that men are still getting paid more and being hired for more important positions? This isn’t the 1900’s; women have made progress since then, and should continue to do so now.

Susan B. Anthony once stated, “Men their rights and nothing more; women their rights and nothing less”, a famous quote that reminds people that there once was a time when women barely had any rights at all. When one thinks of someone like Susan B. Anthony or Elizabeth Cady Stanton, they might think of the issue of women’s rights in the 19th century or the progressive reform movement of the 1900’s. One might think of women’s suffrage or the Triangle Shirt Waste Factory tragedy. Now this is all in the past, a near chapter in our history textbooks or a linked page in a Google search. It is nearly forgotten that women had any issues with equality at all.

  1. I enjoyed the opening! Not only do you show first-hand your thesis, but you use some...descriptive language as well. I think it really adds some excitement to the essay, and it blends "street talk" with formal writing. It was interesting to learn about this technique in “They Say/I Say”, and you use it well here I think. Keep going with it.

  2. I really like the story you have in the beginning. I'm guessing it's a personal one. It helps to tie the first two paragraphs together. This topic is definitely something that needs to be talked about. Even though women have made quite a bit of progress since the 1900's, we're still seen as the weaker sex. I'd really like to see your finished product. Good luck with the rest of it!

  3. I really liked your opening paragraph, not only can I agree with your statement I also laughed in agreement. Aside from having other background information on your topic you have an encounter that evidently shows there's still an attitude going on today that men are superior to men.

  4. its crazy to think that women are superior to men even in the 20th century. I like the quote by susan b anthony, it really works well as the opener of the paragraph, very strong

  5. Like everyone else said, thats' a great opening paragraph. Things like that annoy me too, I mean, if someone looks like they work there, then it should be their job to know where everything is, it shouldn't have to depend on their gender. It was a great way to capture me into wanting to read more.
