The Hours is a movie about living the life that you want, instead of the one you are told to live. In the movie, three different women from three different time periods are shown having one particular thing in common. That is their yearning to be excepted as they truly are with out any confusion. The director brilliantly portrayed these women and their experiences by using a lot of hidden messages. In the movie's trailer and in the morning passage musical score, the symbols here are apparent in every way.
A very common symbol in the trailer and in the passage is the constant presence of flowers. Flowers are traditionally purchased by men and are given to the women. In the movie one woman from the 20's writes in her book" Ms. Dollaway says she will buy the flowers herself". This was a fantasy for the woman for she knew she would never be able to go out and purchase her own flowers. The other woman from the 50's receives flowers from her husband on his own birthday. The one from the more current era goes out and buys the flowers her self. The flowers appearance in the different eras helps paint a picture of how women were treated in that particular time period, each symbolizing the freedom they want or the freedom they have.
In another scene from The Hours, the women from the 20's who's name is Virginia Wolfe tries to run away from her life. She does not ask for permission and goes immediately to train station. Her husband chases after her frantically, in panic that she might be leaving forever. This is the classic symbol of the "Hero" trying to save a "damsel in distress". When the scene flashes forward to the current era , the roles are switched. Ms. Dollaway's old love affair is dying. She is trying to save him from his distress. This also shows how even when the roles are changed, some one is always trying to save somebody elses life.
Lastly, the appearance of children through out the film is a major symbol. In the 50's era the woman has a child who she is constantly left to take care of. Most mothers find joy in taking care of a beloved child but not this mother. Not that she did not love her child, but it constantly reminded her of the burden that she had taken on becoming a 50's house wife. Her child had done nothing wrong, he was the symbol of innocence. His innocence was taken from him when he saw his mother kiss another women. Eventually the mother took off for good, leaving her children and their innocence behind.

Task #2: Symbolism

Symbolism has been in many religious art pieces as well. This picture created by Michelangelo looks as if it is just two people touching hands together. What the picture really captures is the moment in the Bible, " The Creation of Adam", where Adam is brought to life. The hand that is stretched out towards the creators symbolizes the energy of life. This picture is extremely well known through out the Catholic church and is also recognized by many other people, inspiring film makers and many religious conspirators. The significance of this picture is how two hands stretching towards each other can symbolize one of the greatest moments in religious history.

Task #2 : Symbolism

In the late 1800's, Symbolism was another art movement that seemed to take over the creative minds of many artists. One artist in particular created magnificent pictures like the one displayed on the left. Hugo Simburg painted this picture and many others like it, portraying well known mythical characters with ordinary people. In this particular picture it shows a wounded angel being carried away by two little boys. This could be symbolizing children loosing their innocence. The colors play a significant role in this picture. The white clothing of the angel is the symbol for purity and innocence where the black clothing symbolizes death and darkness. The fact that the angel is being carried away with a bandage on his head shows how the innocence of the angel is damaged just like the children's innocence is.

Oh What A Night
Oh what a night
Two sisters on a roll
California breeze sweeps through our hair
The warmth is distracted with a cold gust of wind
The Jersey Boys is the selected sound track
The mountain curves as the car drives past
Road tripping through canyons and beaches
We can taste the ocean air
No worries in the laid back land
Not a care in the world
My sister and I

Sweet Caroline
My name is Caroline and I have red hair. Most people think that red heads are losers but we are really cool. I am a senior in high school and I am at my wits end in this place. Its not that I dislike the school so much as the people in it. I recently just turned 18 which is very exciting because now I feel exactly the same as I did when I was 17. I drive a Jeep Liberty which is useful for snow days like this. I also dislike the snow, it is cold out and I am miserable. I love hanging out with my friends, its what I do the most and it is what I do the best.
